Abstract
South Korea¡¯s suicide rate has increased rapidly in the past two decades. In particular, suicide in old ages jumps up in a very unexpected level. During this decade population structure, especially age structure, has changed as aging goes faster. The purpose of this study was to identify the relative importance of demographic and suicide rate factors for this change in Korea. Data for analysis were from the annual report on the ¡ºCauses of Death Statistics¡» from 1990 to 2010 by the Statistics Korea. This paper uses two major demographic methods including standardization and decomposition. According to main results, The current suicide epidemic in Korea has social factors (rate changes) not to demographic ones except for the elderly 60 years and older between 2005 and 2010. The percentage of social factor was the higher in young group (from 25 to 39 year) rather than the elderly. In addition, there are Easterlin effect of 1961~A1965 born cohort. In addition to life cycle approaches targeted to the prevention of suicides in high risk individuals, social policies are needed to protect populations at suicide risk. This study makes possible to analyze the suicide rate by dividing the population and the proportion rate.
